Our mission, simply put, is to make God famous. We believe that this should be the mission of every church and every believer. The important question is, how do we accomplish our mission? Jesus had the best answer in the Gospel of Mark:

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. “The second is: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other command greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31 HCSB

Love God and love people! This is the foundational blueprint of making God famous, but what is a practical expression for loving God and loving people? Portico Church answers that question in a three phase process found in the book of Acts 2:41-47.

So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about 3, 000 people were added to them. And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to the prayers. Then fear came over everyone, and many wonders and signs were being performed through the apostles. Now all the believers were together and held all things in common. They sold their possessions and property and distributed the proceeds to all, as anyone had a need. Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple complex, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with a joyful and humble attitude, praising God and having favor with all the people. And every day the Lord added to them those who were being saved. Acts 2:41-47 HCSB

These scriptures provide us with a great recipe for making God famous!

They show us that we MUST Communicate, Cultivate, and Celebrate the Gospel!

Communicate The Gospel

This early church had a sense of community that was accepting, loving, and devoted. They were busy building community in order to reach their community with the love of God. They were not only interested in having social gatherings. They were on mission to impact their neighbors with the love of God. Portico Church has the same desire, to get "church" out of a building and impact communities with the love of God.

Cultivate The Gospel

These early disciples not only brought the love of God to new believers, they also consistently helped them to grow and understand this new relationship with God and His church. Just as gardeners get down on their knees and get their hands in the dirt to cultivate a garden; these early believers took the time to lovingly train and build up each other in the faith and love of God. They did not do this by just lecturing them, they lived this new life alongside them. They showed them what it meant to be a follower of Christ by mentoring these new believers. This is the desire of Portico Church as well, to share the love of God and then love people enough to do life with them. This is the beauty of the church, to help each other, to pick each other up, to care for one another, and to guide each other on our spiritual journey in life.

Celebrate The Gospel

Those early believers met every day, they would sing songs, they would pray, they would study the word of God, and they did this for everyone to see. They had organized worship (celebration) services in which people could see their deep love for God and it was contagious! The scriptures tell us that they praised God and had favor with all the people. Portico Church wants to be known for our authentic love for God. We want to have a celebratory spirit every time we come together to worship. We have every reason to celebrate our God with meaning.
